NDIS Insurance Options for Disability Support Workers
Disability support workers — whether employed, self-employed, or working across multiple providers — face real personal liability in the course of their work. We work with a range of insurers to arrange cover suited to your situation. Options include:
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
Specialist property cover for SDA-enrolled dwellings, designed to meet the requirements of properties housing participants with significant functional impairments.
Public Liability Insurance
Covers claims for injury or property damage caused to a participant or third party during the course of your work. A core cover for any support worker — particularly those working independently.
Professional Indemnity Insurance
Covers claims arising from your professional advice or services that cause a participant loss or harm. Required under the NDIS Code of Conduct for independent support workers delivering clinical or advisory services.
Worker’s Compensation Cover
Mandatory cover where staff are employed. We can arrange this in ACT, WA, NT, and Tasmania only — for all other states, placement is through your relevant state authority.
Motor Vehicle Insurance
Covers vehicles used for work-related purposes including participant transport. Standard personal vehicle policies may exclude work-related use — we can arrange cover that reflects how your vehicle is actually used.
Abuse & Molestation Cover
Covers legal defence costs and compensation payments arising from allegations of abuse or misconduct in the course of service delivery. An important cover given the vulnerable nature of the people support workers care for.
Personal Accident Cover
Covers you if you’re injured and unable to work — providing a benefit to replace lost income during your recovery. Important for self-employed and independent support workers who have no employer sick leave.
Management Liability Insurance
Covers directors, managers, and officers of disability service organisations against claims arising from the management of the organisation, including employment practices and regulatory investigations.
Cyber Liability Insurance
Covers the costs of a data breach or cyber attack involving sensitive participant information. Relevant for providers and independent workers using digital care management platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Disability Support Worker & SDA Insurance FAQ
Do I need my own insurance if I’m employed by an NDIS provider?
It depends on how you work. If you’re directly employed and working exclusively for one provider, their insurance may cover you — but you should verify this with your employer, as coverage varies significantly between organisations. If you work across multiple providers, take on shifts through platforms, or operate as an independent contractor, you almost certainly need your own cover. Many support workers assume they’re covered when they’re not — it’s worth confirming before an incident occurs.
What insurance do I need as an independent or self-employed support worker?
At minimum, independent support workers should hold Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance. If you use your own vehicle for work, your personal car insurance policy may not cover work-related use — a separate motor vehicle policy may be needed. Personal Accident insurance is also worth considering to protect your income if you’re injured and unable to work. We’ll assess your specific situation and confirm what’s relevant.
What is Abuse & Molestation Liability cover and do I need it?
Abuse and molestation liability covers legal defence costs and compensation payments if an allegation of abuse or misconduct is made against you in the course of your work. Allegations — even unsubstantiated ones — can result in significant legal costs. Given the nature of disability support work and the vulnerability of the people you care for, this cover is worth serious consideration for any worker providing personal or intimate care.
Does my insurance cover me if a participant is injured in my care?
Public Liability insurance covers claims for injury or property damage caused to a participant or third party during the course of your work. However, the circumstances of the incident, your policy terms, and any exclusions will all affect whether and how a claim responds. This is why having cover that’s structured specifically for disability support work — rather than a generic business policy — matters. We’ll make sure your policy reflects the actual work you do.
How much does disability support worker insurance cost and how do I get a quote?
Premiums depend on whether you’re employed or self-employed, the services you deliver, the number of participants you support, and the covers you need. Because every support worker’s situation is different, we recommend speaking with us directly — we’ll compare options across the market and give you a clear picture of what’s available at what cost. Fill out the form above and we’ll be in touch to get the process started.
